Featured Destination: Robben Island - The Inside StoryRobben Island is situated about 5 miles off the coast from Cape Town. The Island has been inhabited for thousands of years, but became infamous in 1959 when it became a maximum security facility for political prisoners held under the Apartheid regime. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years of his life on this island, yet he never gave up hope and was able to endure extreme hardships to become the first democratically elected President of the Republic of South Africa.
Daily tours are available from the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, and the tours provide the
real insiders story about Robben Island as they are made very intimate and led by former prisoners on the island.
