Close your eyes and imagine for a moment, if you will, the Africa you have always dreamed of; Vast, endless plains full of roaming animals of all shapes and sizes; the still snow-capped peaks of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the continent's highest peak, rising majestically on the horizon; huge lakes and lush rainforests; pristine, unspoiled beaches with shady palms and soothing breezes… Tanzania has all this and more.
Tanzania is well known for having some of the best wilderness and wildlife areas on the African continent. With a full one-quarter of its surface area having been set aside for conservation purposes, the country's national parks (Serengeti National Park being the most famous) and game reserves collectively harbor an estimated 20 percent of Africa's large mammal population. The memories of large herds of zebra and wildebeest grazing along the Ngorongoro Crater's rim, while the lions daze lazily in the shade, will last a lifetime.
But Tanzania is more than animals and plains. As the largest city and capital, Dar es Salaam (Arabic translaton: "House of Peace") is located in a quiet bay off the Indian Ocean coast. Restaurants, shops, office buildings and government centers are all common features of the city, but remnants of its colonial past, both German and British, can still be experienced in the landmarks and architecture around the city. Among "musts" are the National Museum, the Village Museum, St Joseph's Cathedral, and the Botanical Gardens. The old State House and the many colorful markets make for an interesting walking tour around the waterfront and city center and you will be tempted to stop again and again to experience both local foods and crafts.
Beyond the city, Zanzibar requires little introduction; the island enchants and beguiles with its oriental mystique and forgotten exoticism – the very name evokes the Spice Islands and the dhow trade, sultans and palaces.
More than anything, Tanzania's greatest gift is its ability to put us in touch with our natural selves. You will be awed by its natural beauty, smitten by the friendliness of its people and charmed by their villages and rich cultural heritage.
